  • As per my request,
Lilfwog‘s most recent entry gave a glimpse of her thought of LOVE,  a definition of love.  I have been wondering all my life what love is.  Please share with me your definition of LOVE.

What does LOVE mean to you?

Yes, you.  And please not from google.  I do not care spelling or grammar, just your own thought in your own words.  It does not matter the length of your comment.

    ANSWERS:

the love I desire is the passionate, unconditional type of love.  The type of love where one loves regardless of faults or mistakes made.  The love where one can’t imagine being with anyone else, where one’s heart pounds and beats endlessly when that person is near.  The type of love when just the sound of that person’s voice brings smiles to one’s face; the first voice one wants to hear in the morning and the last one wants to hear at night.  The type that inspires sad love songs, beautiful prose, or lovely poetry.  The type that has the power to change one’s mind, to make one hope and make plans for the future, the one that’s capable to causing many sleepless nights…the possible heartbreak that can’t be mended.  Someone one can share hopes and dreams with.  Someone one can imagine growing old with.  According to ———, it is the type of love that is so dangerous that it can destroy an empire (think Cleopatra, Julius Ceaser, & Mark Anthony).

Elizabeth Browning described it perfectly in “How do I love thee?”…

Love is something that only the heart can explain.  Many scholars spent their time and searched in their intellect to find the definition of love.  They concluded that love is the most precisous gift that God has given to mankind.  So I think we have to get on a ladder go up to heaven and ask God.

three years ago, my answer was this:
love (v.): To give of one’s self, without expectation of anything in return.
Today, i am not sure I have a better answer.

can’t say I really know what love is, but I believe it’s whatever one makes it out to be. The ‘one’ in this case doesn’t need to be human; it merely needs to be some living being capable of emotional feelings.

i walk through deep green grass
a cluster of dandelion seeds floats down,
landing in the palm of my outstretched hand.
    i admire their beauty,
and let them fall through my fingers.

this is love, at its most pure.

Love is an invention concocted by bored housewives during the Medieval Age. But you know what they were right about one thing and that is love can make you sick and do very dumb things.

The chivalrous Knight rescuing the damsel in distress from an evil dragon is a classic imagery of love. The knight is sick and obsess over someone who makes him sacrifice his own life. The dragon is the institution of marriage (dragons in western mythology symbolizes greed, and at this time, marriage is about property). And your damsel in distress is a loud outcry, as i say again, desperate housewives.

Love can make you risk your own life, but it can also make you do lousy things against the common good. Take for instance Sir Lancelot. Man of men, strong, smart, handsome, protective. Even he fell victim to the sickness of love and betrayed his king, Arthur. He went against his king’s utopia and toppled what was good: Camelot, the Round Table, friendship.

God or was it Merlin, depends on your print source, told King Arthur that one of his knights will find the Holy Grail and only that the one pure and good will. Everyone thought it was Lancelot but it wasn’t, it was his son Galahad (kinda like Star Wars with Vader and Luke).

My point is, as I rambled long enough, is love makes you do stupid things. And the fact that we humans can learn from our mistakes, we still haven’t caught up for centuries. So, LOVE is a powerful force that makes us come back for more. Love is a sickness that needs some curing!

Oh, if you don’t buy classic literature, then read this more scientific reasoning:

hmm..love? i think you’re in love when you can’t describe your feelings toward that person. it’s a friendship that seems to not end. it’s a relationship that does have it’s ups and downs but in then end you’ll only remember the happy times and not what made you mad. it’s a realationship that can share and talk about everything. it’s were they both scarfice their time and life for each other. Where both are understanding and loving….that is all for now..too early in the morning for me to be thinking about love..hehehe…

What an interesting question. Love is so intangible, and I don’t think you really know what it is, unless you’re feeling it. I have to ask what kind of love you mean? The Greeks have 3 different words for love – one for the love of family, one for the love of humanity, and another for the romantic love between partners. From the other answers, I’m going to assume you mean the third, but if you don’t please let me know!

Love is an ever changing thing. I think the ‘love’ we feel when we’re teenagers, is so different from the love we feel as adults. I have been married before, and have dated between that marriage and my current marriage, and each time, love was different, and each time I thought “This is it!”.

Now, love to me is so many things. Its not being able to remember life without my husband. Not being able to imagine a life without him. Its seeing our unborn children in his eyes. Its picturing us both old and grey, with children grown and moved out. Its seeing grey hairs on my head – something that would have freaked me out before, and not being upset, because I’m experiencing this with HIM. Its knowing that I’m no longer alone, no matter what. And at the same time, its feeling completely independent, being my own person, exploring myself, knowing myself, and still being his wife. And, seeing him do the same. Its watching us both grow separately and together at the same time.

Love is about so much more the passion. Its about way more then sex, though my view of that has changed too.

There’s a great song that I love, that’s called “Something that we do” , that has one definition of love. Its so close to home… The lyrics are located here, if you wish to read them: http://www.clintblack.com/clint-ly.html#lyric27

This was a really great and thought provoking question. I’m glad you asked it – its so interesting to see the different responses :)

what is love??uhhmm,,,good question,,,the answers on my page.

Love can overcome any distance, for no distance, is too great for the bridge of love.
Love can overcome any difference of religion, because now, your religion, is love.
Love can overcome any racial boundary, for pure love will only see, what is underneath.
Love can overcome your mother and your father, for in the end, it is you, that needs to be happy.
Love can overcome your past history, because through love, you will create a new history.
Love can overcome your ex boyfriend, and ex girlfriend, for love will let you know that is why, he or she, is your ex.
Love can overcome rumors, because love does not care what people say, with only their mouths.   My writings can never begin to describe the strength, and power of love.

It can overcome any obstacle before it.
    For through love everything is…
Yet, as we sit alone, and our hearts are broken, while the tears run down our faces, we cant help but know…that sometimes, love just isn’t enough.

love has many meanings depending on who or what it’s for.   If it’s for a significant other, then love is a 2 way conditional love.  It’s a feeling you give to the other person and hoping for love or something else in return.   Parent’s love for their child is somewhat unconditional but not absolute.

Love can look for all the world like mental illness, a blend of mania, dementia and obsession that cuts people off from friends and family and prompts out-of-character behavior — serenades, yelling from rooftops — that could almost be mistaken for psychosis.  Check out http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3204254

the “om” really should have been “Om” (as in ॐ ), but I thought that capitalizing it would distract from the rest of the poem.

Thank you for your kind words.. i was actually thinking that I wished I could write the way you do.. You have a way with stories that I have never been able to write. Our admiration is mutual, it seems. :)

  • The question is not simple and has many answers. Each person defines love differently but with all recognize love when face it.

I think love is an intense emotional feeling of wanting to be with another. Physiologically, the body acts or reacts concurrently with the emotional feeling. For example, the heart beats faster and the pupils dialate. Recently, researchers found that the brain of those in love is different than those not in love. But then again, the researchers cannot distinguish between those in love or in lust.

Biology, psychology, sociology cannot explain love fully or adequately in my opinion. So, in my humble opinion, I know when I am in love when I am mesmerized by her eyes, the smell of her hair, the softness and warmth of her lips, her smooth cool skin, her melodic speech. Simply, I just do not want to be away from her. But most important of all to me, when I am in her presence I am captivated by her as a whole (wart and all). And, hopefully, she feels the same way toward me.
