I am taking a few days off from work combining with Thanksgiving to finish off the Oscar Wao. I will submit it at the end of this week. This morning staying home I caught my neighbor blowing his leaves into my back yard. I opened the door and walked outside. He saw me so he stopped. When I raked the leaves on my front yard he tried to make small talks with me but I did not want to talk because I was mad at his act. If I catch him again I will tell him off. It will be hard to do that but I can muster a little “courage.”
Many people who work with me are going to retire. Some are, in fact, retiring. When I started my job, R. was an architectural draftman in my group. After that he got a promotion and worked for another department. He was nice. Someone told me he was “part time” a poet. I used to hear people to holler “Hello Mr. White!” across the hall. He was black so I thought that was a rude joke to call someone white when he was black, until I found out that White was his last name. A week ago, I saw him talking to a co-worker of mine. I said “Hello Mr. White. How do you do?” He said, “I am well. Thank you. And I will be even better because tomorrow I will start my retirement.” He is only in the fifty but has been working for the company for a long time, long enough to be qualified for rule of eighty. We said good bye. My co-worker said “Not that I am wishing my life away but I would like to retire too.” R. said he would take up woodwork to satisfy his artistic creativity. I have no doubt that he will write more poetry.
This weekend I watched “No country for old men.” It was a really bad movie. It was horrible but I was glued to watching with so much fear. There was a guy who just went around killing everyone interferring his way. He did not have emotion, could tolerate pain, just like a robot. Killing in a movie is nothing new but this killing made no sense except to instill fear. The movie did not provide his reasoning or subconscious mind to explain his murderous acts.
Last night I watched Cast Away. It was a good movie although I was not convinced that a person could survive that plane crash, live on an unhibited island relying only on coconut and fish for four years and stayed healthy. However, it is very creative that they created the character Wilson which was a ball that was drawn a face on it. The main character Chuck Nolan, played by Tom Hank, treated the ball like a friend and was attached to it emotionally like it was a person.
I have reserved from my library a few books I want to read but do not have money to buy and they are coming. The Boat of Nam Le, The Audacity of Hope of Obama, and The mistakes of Vietnam War of McGeorge. I am done with The Secret Scriptures and will start to read The Notebook tomorrow. Will share if I find anything interesting.
What is your plan for Thanksgiving?

haha, Cast Away is a bit surreal. So I know what you meant. Hmm, just spend time with love ones and eat lotsa Turkey. What about you, Chi? Any plans for the holiday?
spend it with family.
Cast Away was enjoyable (how about the tooth extraction scene!?) I haven’t seen No Country. Sounds like you have some good reading plans. I’ve already paid the entrance fee to do a 5K if I don’t change my mind. It’s mostly about donating the money to local charities. Turkey dinner after that.
I missed Thanksgiving this year as we were in Turkey – some sort of irony there. I will have to wait for Christmas for the turkey and stuffing but it is so close. In Canada, Christmas is spectacular and where we put all our emotional energy. Thanksgiving is just a wonderful way to gather after the harvest is truly complete and have a thankful time… in the US it is quite different. Enjoy your Turkey day. -g
