In Vietnamese the eve of New Year is called Đêm Giao Thừa or Đêm Trừ Tịch. Every time I think of New Year Eve I think of total darkness. The cool moist air and the complete darkness of Đêm Trừ Tịch had magical power to stir up in me a feeling that was hard to describe. May be it is the anticipation of a new year coming that I have another chance to start anew and a regret of the time passing that I did not accomplish much.
One poem written by Nguyễn Đ́nh Toàn and was composed into a song by Vũ Thành An about the New Year Eve was playing in my head as I thought of only 2 more nights there will come Đêm Trừ Tịch.
“You came to visit me New Year Eve. There was no better night than tonight. I talked with the street sweeper to give me a yellow leaf as an evidence of my love. Your hands were cold so our love was warm. Your lips was soft so your sleep was sweet. Stars of New Year Eve sparkled in your gentle eyes. Was Tết coming or our hearts cheering Tết?”
Why did the poet ask for the fallen yellow leaf? Why not something else? A rock, for example. Ah, who can understand poets and writers. Perhaps they exaggerated their feeling so well to make us believing that their words are their real feeling?

You know what’s funny…I asked the same thing too…why the yellow leaf and then I thought oh because he was asking something from the street sweeper so the guy must be sweeping leave but, isn’t it ironic, Xuan is the transition from the winter to the spring…all leave are gone by now. Maybe I’m interpreting too much into this or I’m just emphasizing on the wrong thing. It’s a nice poem though. Chu’c Mu*`ng Na(m Mo*’i, will you ever tell me your name ^_~
cuc da is the farthest from love…it’s so hard! maybe la’ vang.. is something more gentle and vulnerable.

happy new year! good bye to the old and hello to the new – we have 2 big dinners for the new year’s. after a while, i can’t remember the meanings but will always remember the traditions and ceremony.
