  • Send the Kitchen God home

My wonderful relative gave me chè đậu nước dừa, a pudding made of black eye beans and sweet rice.  Coconut milk was cooked separately but being served with the pudding.  She said she made it as a gift to the Kitchen God because today, the 23rd of the 12th Lunear month, is the day to send Ông Táo or the Kitchen God to return to Heaven.  In Việt Nam, this is the time to prepare for the celebration of Tết or Lunear New Year.

I do not know the story of the Kitchen God, just remember vaguely that it was a threesome love or marriage between two men and one woman.  The Kitchen God was always made fun off for being so poor that he could not afford to buy pants.  He returned to Heaven with just his long dress, his Mandarin hat, and bare legs.

People want to respect the Kitchen God and make sure to send him home with gifts of food and transportation that is a paper flying carp.  The Kitchen God was the most privy God that knew all secrets in the family and he could tell on the family to the Jade Emperor or Ngọc Hoàng if people do not display respect.

  • hhhmmm….i thought the reason why the god kitchen doesnt have a pair of long pants but a short instead is because he works in the kitchen so wearing a pair of long pants would be inconvenient and plus it could catch on fire.  This year, I will bribe ong tao su*o*`n kho vo*’i tru*’ng!
